In Karachuonyo, Young people are the largest resource in development. Forty percent of the Karachuonyo population is under 20-35 years of age and good percentages are between the ages of 15 and 25.
Young people who are given early access to information and communications technologies tend to become early adopters and adapters of the technologies, skills valued for spurring innovation and economic growth. Youth are at the forefront of societal transformation through I.C.T because technology is what they have grown up with, what they know more about than their parents, and what gives them an edge. With the Internet, young people have acquired a powerful new tool to connect, communicate, innovate and take action on things that matter to them on a scale that transcends their locality.
Young people’s high level of social consciousness are often underestimated, but they care about many things including climate change and the environment, the spread of HIV and other diseases, economic inequality and the lack of employment opportunities. Because of their ideals, those among them who are proficient with I.C.T and are motivated to create change have propensity for linking the use of the technologies to development goals. However, without entrepreneurial skills, they lack the necessary ability to sustain their efforts and overcome challenges that stand in their way.
It is a blessing to Karachuonyo youths because they have community knowledge centers which are equipped with computers and Internet. These facilities should be used as a stepping stone to have access on what is happening in outside world.
I.C.T plays a greater role when it comes to Education System. With the availability of community knowledge centers, teachers should make good use of powerful animations available on the internet. These Animations help student have better understanding than what they read in the books. Let us embrace I.C.T and make good use of it in Karachuonyo.

Some 7,000 officers to be recruited into the police force will undergo thorough vetting and scrutiny by the National Recruitment Committee, KACC and observers before being allowed to join.

The officers will include 3,000 for the regular police and 4,000 for administration police. They will be recruited on May 27 at all the district headquarters.

And for the first time the Administration police and Kenyan regular police will be recruited at one day exercise which to many is free and fair.

In early hours of today many youths gathered at bus stations awaiting for the big day and this was a clear indication of how Kenya has produced young intellectuals without job opportunities to offer, for instance the population that gathered at the kendu bay agricultural show ground were over 3,000 and the same case at the kosele District offices bringing the number to close to 7,000.Every district is expected to have at least 21 people joining the police force, many youths are asking why the government cannot implement job opportunities to cub the unemployment in the country.

Most of the Kenyan youths who attended the recruitment exercise which we spoke to said a bigger number of them have been to universities, colleges and some were out of teacher training colleges but without somewhere to work or get ajob, they said they hope the government would consider their plight as soon as possible if kenya has to achieve its vision 2030 twenty four hour economy.

And at the pala community knowledge center we are out sourcing youths and training them on how to empowere and start their on jobs and also to help them appreciate technology in this twenty first century. The only worry is poverty and lack of interest which we have achieved by offering subsidized rates for training and also allowing them register for online jobs.

”Let the government and well wishers help the youths” hamisi Charles one of the participants at the police recruitment

The only hope now for the youths is for the government to insist on creating more job opportunities for them so that they too can feel the good fruits of education.

Poor school girls will benefit from a major re-usable sanitary pads initiative, which aim to keep them in school. Already, Safaricom Foundation has donated Sh500,000 towards buying 455 sanitary kits dubbed “Huru Empowerment Kits”. Each kit includes a drawstring bag that also functions as a backpack with eight reusable sanitary napkins, three pairs of underwear, soap to wash the pads, information on proper pad use and HIV/Aids prevention and sexual and reproductive health, and a waterproof bag to safely store used pads. The sanitary kits are to be distributed to over 500 girls from girls schools in karachuonyo. The beneficiary schools Nyangajo girls ,Ogenya girls,Kendu muslim among others.

The area MP Hon.james Rege has been in the forefront in ensuring that girl child education is not hampered biological changes in the human cycle, and for this he collaborated with safaricom foundation to roll down this initiative which goes on yearly in the constituency.

This is according to one of the students we spoke to during the occasion, and she says she would rather approach her female madam teacher for assistance instead of burdening her parents who also have very little income to get her the sanitary towels.

The girls are forced to scavenge for used and discarded pads or use old clothes, toilet paper, bits of mattresses, or sheets of newspaper as makeshift pads on most occasions. These unhealthy alternatives are however no substitute for clean, dependable pads.

Due to lack of sanitary kits, some of the girls also fail to attend classes whenever they are having monthly periods. This in the long run impacts negatively on their performance.

The safaricom foundation is spearheading this unhealthy living through providing the girls with the sanitary towels .

The rains are again here with us and the community is stugling so much to work with the unpredicted rainfall, since the Kenyan meteorological departments had warned that the rains will not be experienced in different parts of the country for three months and some parts have indeed been affected with drought and animals dying.

The big challenge and question is how the community is prepared to tackle this change of weather patten.I think since early eighties the community have seen different planting pattens changing from cash crop to horticultural which majorly is not taken to the market for an exchange for commodities but used by the community as food crops. In decades now,the communities in karachuonyo are a happy lot since the government started an irrigation project that is going to help the community in terms of food security since there will be more and enough water for planting crops. The project OLUCH KIMIRA IRRIGATION,is on its initial stages and is expected to be ready by the end of year 2011.

At the same time dams have now been created by the Chinese company running the project in every location of the community and this give the community an insight to start planting even trees to serve the nature and also make forest for future predicted rainfall. The community also now needs sensitization on how to preserve the environment and also the importance of keeping trees instead of cutting them for charcoal burning.

The community is overwhelmed now with joy because its just a matter of time to see the whole project start benefiting the community and also for the jobless youths in the community ,this has actually been there place for getting some little cash daily and i believe that the project brainchild’s should look into that and also consider strategy to include this youths in managing the farms and the scheme (oluch) so that the community does not accommodate idlers and Robers. The road network in the constituency is getting tarmac and this is one of the changes that the community must utilize and also have a easy way of moving fish from the lake to town, whether it rains or not.

The writer is the manager of the pala community knowledge center

FGM:-This is female circumcision, as including all procedures that intentionally alter or injure female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The procedure holds no scientific health benefits for girls and women, but is a culturally valued tradition that serves the needs of males. It harms victims in numerous ways, however, as it involves the removal and damage of healthy and normal female genital tissue, and interferes with the natural functions of girls’ and women’s bodies.
FGM/C has immediate complications which can include shock, bleeding, tetanus or sepsis (bacterial infection), urine retention, open sores in the genital region, injury to nearby genital tissue and even death .After surviving the ordeal, the girl or woman faces further possible health problems including recurrent bladder and urinary tract infections, cysts, infertility, an increased risk of childbirth complications and newborn deaths, and the need for later surgeries.
Besides these physical risks, FGM/C also causes severe psychological damage to many girls and women. The practice is extremely painful and traumatizing and has been related to a range of psychological and psychosomatic disorders. Since the procedures are mostly carried out on young girls between infancy and age 15, and occasionally on adult women, survivors may face a lifetime of complications. The trauma endured by survivors of the practice is unacceptable and a matter of social concern. FGM/C violates the human rights of women and children. All human beings should live in conditions that enable them to enjoy good health and health care. Let us join hands and fight FGM.

The day that all world women were recognized and their work was accepted .The women were people who were not recognized in our society ,they were human being who were not to speak but to listen and obey what they were told. In some community girls were left to help their mother in household and boys were given chance to go to school and venture or explore.

THE CHALLENGES WOMEN FACED.

The women were subjected to men and they were not to talk where men are.

The girls were not to go to school they were left to help their parents

They women were to sit down with there legs straight .

The women were beaten like snakes

THE SUCCESS

In the 21 century women have improved in many parts of the world. When it comes to Africa women have improved in the world of technology e.g the use of internet and health. The girls are doing well in school they manage to defeat even boys. We have women who are holding good jobs in Africa like being minister and and even presidents. When it comes to peace they spear head

and even micro finance the women already have there personal banks which enable them to loan and refund without failing. The women have done a lot in the up bringing of children example a house where the woman is dead that house or home is never happy while a home where the father is

dead the mother would make them happy .

YOU ARE GOOD THANKS FOR EMPOWERMENT MAMA.

December holiday is here with us , schools are closed and our sons and daughters are with us at home. As much as their parents will want to take care of their sons and daughters , the youths also need to take care of themselves as well during their holiday. There will be lots of entertainment activities going on in their areas. If the youths doesn’t take care of themselves as well, their lives might end up being ruined completely. To counter all these the youths will under go three stages in their lfe.

They will face challenges.

They will have to make a decision.

There will be consequences or the results of their decision.

As much as the youths will face challenges during their December holidays , they will need to to make a decision which will dictate their future life . During their December holiday as many of the youths normally say they want to enjoy life. It is not clear whether they are enjoying life or life is enjoying them. While enjoying life as they say, there will be lots of consequences such as unwanted pregnancy , early marriages, sexually transmitted diseases and many more .

To avoid all these , here are some tips for our youths for them to take care of themselves during this long December holiday.

1.Be determined to abstain , know what you will allow in advance. (set boundary).

2.Realize that sexual feelings will pass and no need to be acted upon.

3.Be assertive to stick to your limits , surround yourself with good friends.

Be able to say no and really mean it.

Break any unhealthy and non-supportive relationships.

Have a whole group of young people , your age, who believe in the same thing you do and stick together.

Avoid use of alcohol and drugs.

A day will hardly pass without being reported on media that a child is discovered or found abandoned in a nearby bush or anywhere. Others have also been been left on the hands of unsuspecting fellow travelers or left on bus stage.

My main worry which have been also my main question , who should be blamed for the abandoned children? Is he the father or the mother or both ? In most cases , ladies have been blaming men the action while men also blame ladies on the same.

Let me first talk to the ladies. Think of the following first. How would you feel if your discovered that your mother had abandoned you as a young kid and you are now in the hands of a lady who does not love you because you are not her own? Would be you what you are today had you been abandoned as a young kid? Are you proud to be called a mother ? In fact these are endless questions which has been very much disturbing in deed.

Before ladies make the decision to abandon their young innocent kids for reasons best known to them, the following should be put into consideration and reflect them at he back of their mind.

When you were starting the relationship that gave forth the child, were you forced into relationship or you willingly entered in to it?

How tiresome is it to carry a baby in your womb for 9 months?

How would you feel if your abandoned child dies?

These seems to be endless questions that that the answers are obvious. The truth of the matter is that is that most of the abandoned children are as a result of willing relationship apart from the ladies who by accident get pregnant out of rape or tricked cases.

Despite all these they are never short of excuses if their action is discovered. They would give reasons such as the responsible men have kept off their responsibility as fathers. Other ladies can also take such action in the event of their men getting a new lady. So they do this in protest to show their dissatisfaction with the steps taken by their friends . Some are also walking out of the marriage and out of frustrations they abandon the child.

The gentlemen are not left out of this blame game. They also have reasons to counter the accusations labeled on them by the ladies . Some would be saying that they are still young and not ready to take responsibility as a father. Others will say they were tricked in having a baby by the ladies with expectation that the marry them . They also have endless reason s to defend themselves.

Despite the strong defense from both parties the mother and the father of the abandoned child, it is true that both are on the wrong side .

As much as the young innocent child suffers in the hands of their parents, the blame game continues. The mother says he is the father and the father says she is the mother .

Ladies, gents, be very careful while entering or starting a relationship. Ask yourself is the relation healthy or unhealthy? How can I continue with a relation which end result should not be a backfire. The decision is purely yours . Check out for the kind of relationship you are entering or starting.
